Many of you were born in 1981, I know this because most of you will be from facebook, and, I went to school with many of you. Meaning that many of you turned 40 this year. To be certain, I don’t revel or make much ado of such things; I bring it up more because of the finite counter that is associated with this age.
At this point, things are going to slowly stop working the way that they used to and mobility and conditioning are effectively vital. Diet, exercise, if you haven’t heard the jargon, have become “lifestyles”, if they haven’t, they probably will soon.
Some of you wear pink in October and grow mustaches in November. I’ll note here and now: if you don’t bother with prostate, testicular, mammary and cervix exams, you’re just making fashion statements. Cancer research is well funded and you’re not bringing much additional awareness if you personally aren’t monitoring your own health.
Which brings me to todays topic, it’s something I want to bring up because, well, not many ever do. That’s this: You are a human being, an efficient calculation organ surrounded by a meat thing, and your meat thing is not going to last forever. No longer an If, but When things go on you, you will not be advised, you will not be consulted and you will not be asked for permission.
When the meat thing goes, and your fate falls away from your grasp, and all your push ups and reps, and all your walks and swims and all your dietary fiber is for not. You will be as a rag doll, and life will play with you on its own whims. You must be optimistic in the face of it, you must be hopeful despite the hopelessness, or life will surely discard you.
We have reached a milestone on this mortal coil. I cannot tell you what lies ahead, I cannot tell you how to live your life. I can tell you this. In the moment where your own life is no longer within your own power, the only things you will care about are those closest to you. The things in your life that bring you peace. Your loved ones and pets, your family, your friends.
Let the people who love you know you love them. Do what needs to do done today. There truly is no country for old men, so, accept that what you love, who you love and where you love is fleeting, it will be gone, all together far too soon. Appreciate it, enjoy it. Don’t be bitter about it, because, then it’s all gone, and you will be left bitter.
This is life. It was never supposed to be fair, but, it has always been beautiful.
